The water utility of Hamburg, Germany developed the Hamburg Water Cycle in the Jenfelder Au district, where vacuum toilets send wastewater to a localized system that uses a fermenter to convert it into energy and fertilizer, without going through the conventional treatment process. All water is recycled or returned to the aquifers. It will handle the excrement of 2000 people living in over 800 apartments, making it the largest of its kind in Europe.
